How Our Scrap Rates Are Set

Scrap pricing is not arbitrary haggling. At Sivam Metal, every quotation is rooted in verifiable international exchange benchmarks, domestic mill recovery formulas, and on-site physical grading. Here is the exact arithmetic.

01
🌐

Global & National Benchmarks

We track real-time exchange rates from the London Metal Exchange (LME) and COMEX futures, converted at the live USD/INR exchange rate. These establish the raw baseline value for 99.9% pure refined metal.

02
⚖️

Recovery Yield & Melting Formula

Scrap requires collection, sorting, shearing, and induction furnace re-melting. The gap between the refined benchmark and scrap price represents melting loss, slag, and transport economics.

03
🔬

Chemical & Physical Grade Testing

Not all scrap of the same metal is equal. Bare copper pays more than insulated wire; thick HMS-1 beams pay more than thin rusted sheet; SS 304 food-grade pays double SS 202 decorative steel after chemical drop testing.

Certified Digital Weighing & Tare

Every load is weighed on certified digital weighbridges and electronic platform scales in your presence. Attached non-metals (wood, rubber beading, concrete) are shown and deducted as visible tare.

The 5 Dedicated Scrap Pricing Engines

One single formula cannot accurately price every scrap material. A piece of pure copper cathode, a 60/40 brass water tap, a 500 kg electric motor, and factory demolition rubble require distinct mathematical pricing engines.

E-1
🌐

Engine 1: Market Non-Ferrous

Copper, Aluminium, Lead, Zinc, Nickel, Tin

Formula: LME ($/MT) × USD/INR ÷ 1000 = Refined ₹/kg → - Remelt Scrap Discount % → × Grade Factor % → - Labour & Transport → - Margin = Final Buying Rate ₹/kg.

E-2
🔩

Engine 2: Ferrous Iron & Steel

HMS 1, HMS 2, Cast Iron, Structural MS, Sheet

No LME index. Derived directly from local induction furnaces and rolling mill billet rates (Salem & Mandi Gobindgarh) minus shearing, loading, and transit costs.

E-3
🎺

Engine 3: Alloy Composition

Honey Brass, Gunmetal Bronze, SS 304, SS 316

Formula: Intrinsic Value = Σ(Element % × Element Benchmark). Brass is 60% Cu + 40% Zn; SS 304 is 8% Ni + 18% Cr + 74% Fe minus furnace refining slag deductions.

⚙️

Engine 4: Composite Scrap Recovery

Electric Motors, Armored Cables, Transformers

Multi-metal decomposition: 500 kg Motor = 12% Cu (60 kg) + 8% Al (40 kg) + 65% Fe (325 kg) + 15% Waste − dismantling labor − haulage = Net Maximum Purchase Payout.

E-5
🧹

Engine 5: Site Lot Clearance & Offset

Factory Debris, Broken Glass, Mixed Lots

Safe site cleanup where non-recyclable debris and broken glass handling costs are offset against the high intrinsic cash value of copper, brass, and heavy steel lots.

The Domestic Scrap Discount Formula

Select any metal to see how today's yard rate is computed from the domestic benchmark.

1. Market Benchmark₹75 / kgIndia Domestic Refined Steel
−
2. Scrap Discount (50%)₹37.50 / kgMelting loss & processing
=
3. Basic Yard Pay₹37.50 / kgStandard Commercial Grade
Yard Grade Range₹34.00 – ₹43.50 / kg

Melting recovery yield: 88–92% in induction furnace. Heavy structural beams command top rate; rusted thin sheet commands base.

Value Optimization

6 Practical Factors That Move Your Final Quote

Simple preparations you can make before our truck arrives to land in the highest possible price tier.

⚡

1. Material Segregation (Top Value Gain)

Never sell copper, brass or aluminium mixed inside an iron load. Mixed piles are legally paid at the rate of the cheapest metal in the pile. A few minutes of sorting is worth thousands of rupees.

✂️

2. Stripping Attached Non-Metals

Wood, rubber gaskets, glass panels, and concrete weights are deducted as dead tare. Stripping attached non-metals beforehand turns dead weight into paid metal weight.

💧

3. Dryness & Moisture Protection

Paper, cardboard cartons, and machining swarf should be kept under cover. Damp paper loses value rapidly, while oil-drained swarf commands a higher recovery premium.

📦

4. Volume Accumulation

Consolidated larger lots (e.g. 1 ton vs 50 kg) reduce logistics overhead per kilogram. We pass these logistical savings directly to you with improved bulk consignment rates.

🧪

5. Alloy Verification

Don't let SS 304 be graded down to SS 202. Ask for a chemical reagent test on stainless steel and brass alloys before quoting to guarantee you get the exact alloy rate.

🏗️

6. Ground-Floor Accessibility

Scrap stored at ground level with easy vehicle access saves manual labor and loading time, allowing us to offer maximum purchase rates without site extraction deductions.

Unlike middlemen who quote arbitrary numbers, Sivam Metal uses an arithmetic valuation model based on 4 pricing pillars: global benchmark rates, grade purity, processing costs, and volume logistics.

Learn exactly how we test grades, calculate contamination tare, and ensure you receive fair, transparent compensation for every kilogram.

The 4 Pillars of Scrap Valuation

Every quotation is determined by these four verifiable metrics.

Refined Benchmark (Base)

Global LME and domestic indices establish the raw market ceiling for 99.9% pure refined metal.

Purity & Grade Factor

Scrap metal requires smelting and refining. Clean bare copper retains 90-95% of benchmark; insulated wire retains 40-60%.

Processing & Smelting Deduction

Energy, gas cutting, shearing, baling, and transportation costs required to transport scrap to downstream mills.

Volume Bonus

Commercial and industrial consignments above 500 kg receive wholesale premium rates due to lower logistics overhead.

Common questions

Why is scrap rate lower than LME or MCX?
Exchange quotes are for 99.9% pure refined ingots ready for manufacturing. Scrap contains impurities, insulation, or alloys and requires collection, sorting, cutting, and re-smelting.
How do you test metal grades at pickup?
We carry handheld magnetic testers, spark test tools, and electronic density scales to distinguish SS 304 from SS 202, copper from brass, and aluminium alloys right in front of you.
Is there any deduction for weighing scales?
No hidden deductions. We use certified digital platform scales with an open digital display visible to you, showing gross weight and tare weight transparently.
