About lead scrap

The common sources are wheel balance weights, sheet used in radiation shielding, cable sheathing, sinkers and lead from battery breaking. Because lead is both valuable and hazardous, its route to a smelter is regulated — it must reach a recycler authorised to process it, not a general melting yard.

We do not break batteries at customer sites. Whole batteries are collected as batteries and sent intact to authorised processors; only lead that is already separated and identified arrives as lead scrap. This distinction matters legally and we hold to it.

Handle lead with gloves, keep it away from food areas and wash your hands after moving it. If children are around the storage area, tell us when booking and we will prioritise the collection.

Grades and sub-types

We sort and weigh each grade separately in front of you rather than averaging a mixed load down to its lowest rate.

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting lead scrap.

Alloy purity

Soft lead grades above antimonial or mixed lead.

Steel clips and attachments

Wheel weights carry steel clips that are deducted.

Contamination

Paint, plaster and residue reduce the recoverable metal.

Documentation

Regulated material needs proper handover paperwork, which we complete.

Yes, when it goes to an authorised recycler with proper handover records — which is exactly how we route it.
Can I break my old batteries and sell the plates?
No. Battery breaking outside an authorised facility is unsafe and not permitted. Hand over whole batteries and we handle the rest.
Do you collect lead shielding from clinics?
Yes, with the documentation that clinical and industrial shielding removal requires.
