About brass scrap

The cleanest brass grade is yellow brass solids: taps, valves, fittings, locks, handles and vessels with no steel, plating or plastic. Chrome-plated bathroom fittings still count as brass but are graded slightly lower, because the plating has to be dealt with in the melt.

Machining shops produce honey brass turnings — bright golden swarf from turning brass rod. Kept clean and drained, this is a well-paying grade; mixed with steel swarf or soaked in coolant it drops sharply, so a dedicated bin is worth the floor space.

Watch for pieces that look like brass but are not: gunmetal and bronze are heavier and redder, while plated zinc castings feel light and are worth far less. We identify these at intake and grade each portion rather than paying a single blended rate.

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting brass scrap.

Steel content

Steel spindles, springs and screws move brass into the lower irony grade.

Plating

Chrome and nickel plating grades slightly below clean yellow brass.

Swarf cleanliness

Honey turnings must be free of steel swarf and standing coolant.

Alloy identity

Bronze and gunmetal are separate alloys and are quoted separately.

Get the better grade

  1. Unscrew steel spindles and springs from valves and taps where it is quick to do.
  2. Keep honey brass turnings in their own bin, drained of coolant.
  3. Separate anything reddish and heavy — it is likely bronze, and priced differently.
  4. Do not polish or clean brass before selling; it changes nothing in the rate.

Brass Scrap — common questions

How do I know it is brass and not bronze?
Brass is yellower and slightly lighter; bronze is redder and denser. We confirm with a spot test at intake and grade each accordingly.
Do you buy chrome-plated bathroom fittings?
Yes. They are graded just below clean yellow brass because of the plating, but they are still a good non-ferrous grade.
Can you collect brass turnings weekly?
Yes. Scheduled swarf collection with supplied bins is a standard arrangement for machining units.
