About aluminium scrap

The cleanest aluminium is extrusion: window and door sections, partition framing and architectural profiles. Sold free of glass, rubber gasket, screws and steel inserts, it is the top grade. The same sections with glass panels and steel hinges still attached are bought at a blended rate because we absorb the stripping work.

Cast aluminium — engine parts, pump bodies, cookware and machinery castings — melts differently from extrusion and is graded separately. Alloy wheels sit in their own category and are among the better-paying aluminium grades, provided the tyre and steel balance weights are off.

Aluminium also appears in mixed assemblies: radiators with copper tubing, cables with an aluminium conductor, and utensils with steel handles. We separate these at the yard and pay by component, which is why a mixed load takes longer to grade but returns more than selling it as one lump.

We sort and weigh each grade separately in front of you rather than averaging a mixed load down to its lowest rate.

What we cannot take

  • Aerosol cans and pressurised containers
  • Aluminium vessels holding chemical or paint residue
  • Aluminium composite panels with heavy plastic core, unless in bulk by arrangement

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting aluminium scrap.

Alloy type

Extrusion, cast and sheet are separate grades with separate rates.

Steel content

Screws, hinges, inserts and steel cores drop the load to irony aluminium.

Coating and glass

Powder coating is tolerated; glass, rubber and gaskets are deducted.

Cleanliness

Paint, dirt and oil all reduce recoverable metal per kilogram.

Get the better grade

  1. Strip glass, rubber gasket and steel screws from window sections for the top grade.
  2. Keep cast aluminium apart from extrusion — they are not the same rate.
  3. Remove tyres and steel balance weights from alloy wheels before weighing.
  4. Flatten and bag cans; loose cans are mostly air and cost more to transport.

Where it ends up

Re-melted into billet and ingot for new sections, castings and sheet at a fraction of the energy of primary smelting.

Aluminium Scrap — common questions

Do you buy aluminium window frames with the glass still in?
Yes, but at a lower blended rate. Removing the glass and rubber yourself moves the material into the clean extrusion grade.
Are alloy wheels worth selling separately?
Yes. They are one of the better aluminium grades and should never go into a mixed iron or general aluminium load.
How do I tell aluminium from stainless steel?
Aluminium is noticeably lighter for its size and non-magnetic; stainless is heavy and often weakly magnetic. We confirm at pickup either way.
