About steel turnings & borings scrap

Turnings and borings are graded on three things: what alloy they are, how much cutting oil or coolant they hold, and whether grades have been mixed. A clean MS swarf bin, drained and free of stainless or aluminium chips, is a saleable feedstock. The same weight of mixed, dripping swarf is a problem material and priced accordingly.

For engineering units in and around Coimbatore and Madurai this is usually a standing arrangement: we place labelled bins at each machine group, collect weekly or on call, weigh at pickup and issue a consolidated statement. That keeps the material segregated at source, which is the only point where segregation is cheap.

Briquetted or compacted swarf is bought at a better rate than loose material because it transports and melts far more efficiently. If you already have a briquetting press, tell us — it changes the quote.

Grades and sub-types

We sort and weigh each grade separately in front of you rather than averaging a mixed load down to its lowest rate.

What we accept

  • Lathe, milling, drilling and boring swarf in segregated bins

  • Punching and blanking scrap from press shops

What we cannot take

  • Swarf saturated with free-flowing coolant or oil
  • Bins mixed with cotton waste, gloves, plastic and general shop litter
  • Swarf contaminated with grinding wheels or abrasive debris

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting steel turnings & borings scrap.

Alloy purity

Single-alloy bins are worth clearly more than cross-contaminated ones.

Oil and coolant

Free liquid is weight that recovers no metal, so it is discounted.

Density

Briquetted material transports and melts better and carries a premium.

Collection volume

A regular monthly tonnage supports a better standing rate than casual sales.

Get the better grade

  1. Use one labelled bin per alloy and keep them physically apart on the shop floor.
  2. Let swarf drain over a sump grate before it goes into the collection bin.
  3. Keep cotton waste, gloves and packaging out of swarf bins entirely.
  4. Tell us your monthly tonnage so we can quote a standing rate instead of spot rates.

Do you supply bins for the shop floor?
Yes. We supply and label bins per alloy and schedule collection to match your production cycle.
How is a regular collection settled?
Each pickup is weighed and recorded, and we settle on your preferred cycle — per pickup or consolidated monthly.
Can you handle oily swarf?
We can collect it, but free oil and coolant reduce the rate. Draining the bins before pickup is the simplest way to protect your value.
